“False friends” in Polish

As in many other languages, there are a number of ‘false friends’ in the Polish language, too. According to Boston Translation workers, some such words that are spelled and pronounced in a way similar to a particular English word, but in fact they have a very different meaning are: concurrence – konkurencja (meaning ‘competition’ in Polish, the Polish Translation of ‘concurrence’ being ‘zbieżność’, ‘zgoda’), divan-dywan (meaning ‘carpet’ in Polish, the Polish Translation of ‘divan’ being ‘otomana’), hazard-hazard (meaning ‘gambling’ in Polish, the Polish Translation of ‘hazard’ being ‘zagrożenie’), fabric-fabryka (meaning ‘factory’ in Polish, the Polish Translation of ‘fabric’ being ‘tekstura, tkaninka’), preservative-prezerwatywa (meaning ‘condom’ in Polish, the Polish Translation of ‘preservative’ being ‘zachowawcy’),  and other.
